The Auditor General has identified several areas of concern in relation to the operations of the Housing Development Corporation.
In her latest report, Auditor General Jaiwantie Ramdass noted that funds allocated for housing development were utilised for other expenses, including maintenance activities such as grass cutting, drain works and waste management.
The report indicates that expenditure by the HDC was, in some instances, made outside of the originally approved purpose of the funds, raising concerns about adherence to established financial guidelines.
According to the report, monies earmarked for housing development were redirected to cover routine operational expenses. The Auditor General noted that such practices could affect the Corporation’s ability to fully deliver on its housing mandate.
The report also highlighted weaknesses in internal controls and supporting documentation, pointing to the need for strengthened systems to ensure proper oversight and accountability.
