Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander is expressing confidence in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, noting that citizens can expect further improvements in the near future.
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro and his team have received the full endorsement of Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander.
The Minister expressed his vote of confidence while speaking with members of the media at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Sports Day at the Police Barracks in St. James on Saturday.
He also weighed in on the Police Commissioner’s performance during his first year in office.
“This is how I see when you ask me about confidence. That’s what we stand together as here. It’s a team effort and not an individual effort. So the team effort, I have total confidence in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service from where I came from.”
Minister Alexander revealed that additional resources will be allocated to the Police Service, including the use of drone technology in the fight against crime.
He stressed the importance of modernising law enforcement to stay ahead of evolving criminal activity.
“What we intend to do is to really increase these efforts in order for it to adapt to the crime that we’re getting now. So it’s about bringing more resources for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to utilise until we fix the dilapidated manpower resource that was left with us and for the service to fend for themselves.”
Addressing concerns about police body cameras, the Minister confirmed that more units will be rolled out soon.
“The Police Service, the Ministry, does not have an issue with police officers wearing body cams. What I have decided to do at this time is to protect law enforcement first by giving them the requisite protection gear so they can better protect you as citizens and this nation as a whole. So while the body cams, they are coming, let us protect the officers. 7.62mm, 5.56mm ammunition, all of that. What do you want? You want a man to be confident enough to take on these persons or you want him to tape it with all the requisite equipment?”
The Minister once again stressed the role of parents and guardians in crime prevention, urging them to take greater responsibility for their children.
He also revealed plans to establish a psychosocial intervention team that will be deployed in schools and communities nationwide.
