Independent Senator Dr. Marlene Attzs Calls For Clarity On Security Plans

Independent Senator and Economist Dr. Marlene Attzs has commended the Minister of Finance Davendranath Tancoo for his presentation of a people-centred budget focused on restoring confidence in the economy.

During her contribution to the debate on the “Appropriation (Financial Year 2026) Bill, 2025”, Dr. Attzs said the 2026 budget reflects both a spirit of renewal and a moral imperative for inclusion. However, she stressed that it must also address the nation’s pressing challenges, including crime, foreign exchange shortages and rising debt.

“On these counts, Madam Vice President, I felt that the 2026 budget fell short, because before we can assess the fairness of any fiscal package, we must first examine the economic fundamentals on which the budget stands.”

Dr. Attzs said there is a need for greater clarity on the Government’s crime reduction plan, adding that during the budget debate, Trinidad and Tobago missed the opportunity to hear the Minister of Homeland Security outline his strategies and measurable outcomes.

“Madam Vice President, let us be honest, there can be no economic prosperity in Trinidad and Tobago unless we have security. Investors will not invest and communities cannot thrive where fear replaces trust. True security is not simply about police patrols. It is about prevention through opportunity. When young people see pathways in education and entrepreneurship, in sport, and the creative industries, they are less likely to be lured into a life of crime.”
