Karega Mandela Honoured At Emancipation Village

The Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village was filled with energy and reverence on Wednesday during a heartfelt tribute to Rapso artiste Karega Mandela.

In a moment of deep appreciation, Mr. Mandela received a special award from the Director of Regional and Pan-African Affairs at the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Khafra Kambon.

Dr. Kambon praised Mandela’s artistic contributions as “uplifting to our society,” recognising his lasting impact on cultural expression and social consciousness through Rapso music.

“It is my honour to present this token to Brother Karega Mandela.”

The evening’s performances were a powerful homage, with each artist reimagining Mandela’s most impactful works. The tribute honoured his legacy and reaffirmed his influence in Rapso and the cultural identity of Trinidad and Tobago.

Popularly known as “The Rapso Soldier,” Mandela is a former member of the legendary Network Rapso Riddim Band, once led by the late Lutalo Masimba, better known as Brother Resistance.

The Emancipation Village’s Pan-African Festival TT celebrations in commemoration of Emancipation 2025 will continue until 1st August.
