Condolences and tributes continue to pour in for the former President of the National Gas Company and recipient of the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Mark Loquan, who died on Sunday after a battle with cancer.
Prime Minister Stuart Young, on his Facebook page, paid tribute to Mark Loquan as “a son of Trinidad and Tobago and a great patriot”.
Mr. Loquan retired from his post as President of NGC in 2024, stepping back from public life.
In his social media post, Prime Minister Young noted that he worked very closely with Mr. Loquan from 2017 until Mr. Loquan fell ill in February 2024. Prime Minister Young described Mr. Loquan as a talented and humble man, someone genuinely concerned about our country and dedicated to doing his part to make it better.
Meanwhile, President Christine Kangaloo described Mr. Loquan as someone who tirelessly served with selfless dedication to the development of our local energy sector and culture, particularly in the area of the steelpan.
And the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago said it was with deep sorrow that the entity’s Board had learned of his passing. The body also noted that he had also made a contribution to the local music and cultural sector, an area which he pursued over the years and was focused on after his retirement from the NGC.
A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Mr. Loquan received First-Class honours in chemical engineering. He started his energy career in 1982 at Trinidad Nitrogen Company Limited as a process engineer before being appointed as the first local President of Hydro Agri Trinidad, now Yara Trinidad Limited.
Mr. Loquan served in numerous leadership positions, not just in Trinidad and Tobago but around the globe, his most recent being Chief Executive Officer of Yara Pilbara of Australia.
He was awarded the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in 2024.
