Mercedes Withdraws Monaco Appeal

Mercedes has dropped their challenge over the result of last month’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The team wanted to review a pit-lane speeding penalty that cost George Russell a podium finish, but they’ve now decided not to push the case any further.

Mercedes lodged a “right of review” request with the FIA, after the governing body overturned a similar penalty handed to Alpine’s Pierre Gasly after the Monaco Grand Prix.

It later emerged that officials measured the Monaco pit-lane speed limit incorrectly, using a longer distance than was actually possible to drive.

Russell was one of five drivers caught speeding. But his case was tangled up in a chaotic sequence of safety cars, crashes and a red flag, which left him serving a drive-through penalty that dropped him from third to twelfth.

Mercedes concluded there was no realistic way to restore Russell’s result, saying it would not serve the team or the sport to drag the matter on.

Separate protests lodged by McLaren and Red Bull with the FIA Court of Appeal are still ongoing.
