Minister Ameen Pushes Regional Carnival Growth – “Rural Communities Must Benefit”

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen is hoping that regional carnivals will continue to strengthen in Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaking during an interview on the Trinidad and Tobago Today show, Minister Ameen says these types of carnivals contribute significantly to the economic development of the community.

“It means that vendors get more sales. It means that mas men, in terms of the local economy, that, to me that was also very significant, and I want to see regional carnivals continue to be strengthened so that rural communities could benefit.”

Ms. Ameen said this will allow local government bodies to continue to be involved.

“Not just in roads and drains and picking up the garbage but in culture and facilitating culture and cultural development, facilitating economic development within their region.”

Minister Ameen noted a return of Carnival in some communities, such as Curepe.

“This year we had, instead of having the judging point at Sforzata, where they have had it for many years, we reintroduced the street parade for Kiddies Carnival. So our children were on the streets, the little masqueraders, and we had a very short route for them, and that added to Curepe, and it means that the lady who is making homemade ice cream, the person who is making pholourie are all going down the road, everybody in front of their yard and sell, and they have people passing so it contributes to the economy in that way.”

Minister Ameen said regional carnivals also give creatives the opportunity to showcase their talents and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
