The Municipal Police Service has come under increased public scrutiny in recent months following several incidents involving officers.
But Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen says the attention presents an opportunity to strengthen the service, improve accountability, and rebuild public trust.
As officers gathered for the Municipal Police Service Recognition and Commendation Ceremony on Tuesday, Minister Ameen addressed the challenges currently facing the service.
She acknowledged that recent incidents have placed them under intense public scrutiny but said it should be seen as a catalyst for growth and reform.
“Sometimes these negative things have to overflow. When there is an abscess, it has to be cut. It has to come out so that you can thrive, and therefore, I welcome the scrutiny.”
The Minister reminded officers that their actions reflect not only on themselves but on the reputation of the entire Municipal Police Service.
She urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in every interaction with the public.
“It means that every officer has to perform with that scrutiny in mind in everything that you do. It means that every officer has a responsibility to carry the name of the service as you wear your uniform, as you wear your badge.”
Assistant Commissioner of Municipal Police, Wayne Mystar, also sought to encourage officers who may be discouraged by the challenges they encounter.
“Difficult times do not define us. However, they reveal us. They reveal our character, our resilience, and our determination to continue serving despite obstacles. History shows that the strongest organisations are not built during easy times, they are forged through perseverance, unity, and shared commitment to a higher purpose.”
The Municipal Police Service Recognition and Commendation Ceremony was held at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation on Tuesday.
