The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation reminds the public that holders of valid driver’s licences can renew their licences up to three (3) months before the expiration date.
The extended renewal period follows an amendment to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 48:50, by Legal Notice No. 48 of 2026.
Previously, driver’s licences could only be renewed one (1) month prior to the expiration date. With effect from March 16, 2026, the renewal period was extended to three (3) months before expiry. This provides motorists with greater flexibility to renew their licences in advance, helps to reduce last-minute renewals and supports more efficient service delivery.
The Ministry also reminds the public that motorists whose driving permits have been expired for no more than five (5) years can apply for renewal online through the Ministry’s website https://mtca.gov.tt. The online renewal service is applicable to holders of Class 1 (motorcycles) and Class 3 (light motor vehicles).
The Ministry encourages motorists to make use of the extended renewal period and the online renewal service by renewing their driver’s licences in advance of the expiration date.
