New ANR Robinson Airport Terminal Nears Opening

The new ANR Robinson International Airport terminal is almost ready to be operationalized.

The building was handed over to the Airport’s Authority on Sunday. However, there has been some worry in the public about accessibility of commercial spaces by local business owners and vendors.

Chief Secretary, Farley Augustine says the THA is aware and is advocating behind the scenes.

With the new ANR Robinson International Airport terminal officially handed over to the Airports Authority, attention turns to the pressing question of when it will become operational.

“We do have a game plan, we have a date for the opening of the airport, however I would prefer to have the date announced on Monday.”

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Eli Zakour is expected to be present for the announcement.

The Chief Secretary stated he met with relevant ministers, heads of Airport Authority, Caribbean Airlines and other key stakeholders to finalize plans for the full operationalization of the airport terminal.

He also addressed concerns expressed by Tobagonian concessionaires about being ‘priced out’ of spaces in the new terminal building.

“I will not support nor do I think it is the intention of the airport’s authority to be punitive in any way or to be extremely harsh in terms of their fees and so on and so I think with some patience and some time, people would be moving into the airport effortlessly.”

Mr Augustine clarified that it is the Airport Authority’s responsibility to manage the new terminal, and not the THA. However, he is working behind the scenes to ensure existing concessionaires can continue operating in the new terminal.

“But I recognize that for micro entrepreneurs it would be difficult to do their own build out and to meet the standard we want for a new terminal and so the THA is intervening in that regard.”

A meeting with concessionaires is scheduled for Wednesday evening.

The Chief Secretary said interventions have already been made for taxi operators and car rental companies who previously expressed concerns.
