New Push To Curb Sugar In Schools Nationwide

Government is once again re-examining the health of children and the level of sugar they consume at schools nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the laptop distribution initiative for Form One students at Penal Secondary School, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar thanked Minister of Health Dr. Lackram Bodoe for a Cabinet Note he submitted to regulate the reduction in students’ sugar intake.

“So when you go to your canteen and you go to buy things to eat and drink, we are reducing the sugar content because of your health, so treat your brain well, but also treat your body well. Dr. Bodoe, I thank you very much.”

She, however, attempted to persuade the students not to be upset with the move, as they may no longer be able to get their soft drinks with all that sugar.

The Prime Minister also used the opportunity to share a light moment with the students, offering them some guidelines and key words of encouragement.

“See good, be good, do good, and good will always follow you.”
