Pan on D Avenue XI has not been cancelled.
Fifteen steelbands are expected to perform on Ariapita Avenue on Independence Night. Despite a post circulating on social media claiming the event has been cancelled, organisers have confirmed that no such request has been made, and the event will go on as planned.
TTT News spoke with Chairperson of the Woodbrook/St. James Community Association, Ayana Garcia, who clarified the situation.
“No, the event is not cancelled. However, there is a social media post circulating that has caused some confusion, but that information is incorrect. Pan on D Avenue XI remains scheduled for Independence Night, Sunday the 31st of August 2025, as the grand closing of Steelpan Month and our celebration of our nation’s independence.”
Ms. Garcia also confirmed that no Ministry had requested the event be cancelled, stressing that only the organising committee or the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service can officially do so. She added that steps are being taken to ensure everything runs smoothly.
“Misleading information can certainly cause confusion and concern among patrons, which is why we are moving quickly to clarify the facts. Our official communication channels, which would be the Woodbrook/St. James Community Association on Facebook, are moving swiftly to provide accurate updates so the public, sponsors, and bands can feel confident that the event is on track and will be delivered as promised.”
When asked about safety at this year’s event, Ms. Garcia expressed confidence, saying it will be just as secure as in previous years. She noted that since its start in 2012, the event has remained incident-free, as steelpan promotes unity, not violence.
“We take safety very seriously, and we are working closely with both the City Police and the Woodbrook Police and have already submitted the necessary applications for official police presence. Security arrangements are being coordinated to ensure that patrons, performers, and stakeholders can enjoy the celebration in a safe environment.”
Pan on D Avenue was founded by Ms. Garcia’s father, former Woodbrook Councillor Cleveland Garcia, who passed away on May 26th 2022. His family remains deeply involved in the event, ensuring his legacy lives on through this tradition.
