Minister of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development and Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Kennedy Swaratsingh, has praised the 2026 National Budget, saying it delivered the critical reforms needed to rebuild Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking as the Senate began debate on the Appropriation (Financial Year 2026) Bill on Monday, he said the Budget is a declaration of purpose to restore confidence, rebuild the economy, and renew hope across every community in Trinidad and Tobago.
“At a time when people of our great islands, through their democratic right, call for an administration committed to transparency, compassion, and effective governance, this administration has answered that call.”
According to Dr. Swaratsingh, the Budget, titled “T&T First: Building Economic Fairness Through Accountable Fiscal Policies,” is anchored by five strategic pillars that guide the nation’s public policy.
“1. Restoring confidence and fiscal stability. 2. Unlocking productive investments and jobs. 3. Optimising and commercialising public assets. 4. Modernising infrastructure, transport, and digital services. 5. Protecting citizens through social investment and safety nets.”
The Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to economic diversification and innovation through its US$10 million budget allocation to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Research and Development Fund.
“This initiative will encourage our nation’s researchers and innovators to direct their efforts towards priority areas of national importance, including climate resilience, citizen security, sustainable agriculture, and health innovation.”
Dr. Swaratsingh reminded the public that a firm foundation for change is being laid through transparent management and strategic investment, noting that transformation takes time and does not happen overnight.
