PM Extends Sympathy Following Deadly Earthquakes In Venezuela, Offers Support

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has extended sympathy to the government and people of Venezuela following Wednesday’s earthquakes, which caused loss of life and widespread destruction.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Venezuela was struck by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, which was followed seconds later by an even stronger 7.5-magnitude quake. With both occurring close to the surface, the destruction was more severe, leaving at least 188 people dead and 1,500 injured.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said, “The Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, and I, extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Government and people of Venezuela following the recent earthquake, which has caused loss of life and destruction.”

She added that Trinidad and Tobago stands ready to offer assistance.

“Our thoughts, prayers and solidarity are with all those affected. We stand ready to assist in whatever humanitarian way we can during this difficult time.”

The Prime Minister also expressed hope for the country’s recovery, stating, “We wish the people of Venezuela safety, strength and a swift recovery as they navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster.”
