Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has rejected criticism following T&T’s decline in the World Press Freedom Index, stating that the Government remains firmly committed to media freedom and freedom of expression under the law.
Responding to a question in the Lower House on Friday, she emphasised that press freedom has never been threatened by the Government’s conduct or tone, and that respect for the media remains central to its governance.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said her administration continues to support strong journalism that serves the public interest while maintaining professional standards, stressing that responsible reporting is essential to democracy.
“My Government, both previously and presently, have remained committed to ensuring press freedom and operating with the highest level of respect and freedom of expression within the confines of the existing law. Our style, that of my Government, has never been to insult, denigrate, buff, or muzzle the media. That is not our way. Therefore, I can assure all of Trinidad and Tobago, including media practitioners, that my Government supports fair, accurate, transparent, responsible, and non-partisan reporting.”
