The Police Media Briefing on Monday was interrupted by a fire alarm, which caused a total evacuation of the Police Administrative Building in Port of Spain.
Gold Commander, ACP Richard Smith, was delivering opening remarks at the Briefing on Monday afternoon when the alarm went off at 1:40pm.
Just after 2pm, the Acting Police Commissioner, Junior Benjamin, assured that all personnel had left the building and all protocols were followed, including calling fire officials.
“What would normally happen on every floor, we have persons who are assigned to at least check for those persons who are on the floor.”
Acting Police Commissioner Junior Benjamin later gave the reason for what triggered the fire alarm.
“The alarm came off as a result of some repair works that had been done in the building at this time. Apparently, one of the breakers tripped, and as a result of the breaker being tripped, we had that situation where the alarm went off. They checked to see if there was any form of fire and they declared that the place was safe.”
Staff and police officers were allowed to re-enter the building around 2:30pm.
