Preserving The Rhythm: South And Central Trinidad’s Steelband Legacy

The steelpan is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most iconic cultural inventions. Yet, many of the communities and steel bands that helped shape its history in South and Central Trinidad remain underrepresented in the national narrative. In this interview, Dr. Jeannine Remy, author of a landmark 400-page publication documenting 64 steel bands from the region, and Kwesi Moore, PRO of Pan Trinbago, discuss the years-long research behind the work and its cultural significance.

The conversation explores the vital contribution of South and Central Trinidad to the steelband movement, the importance of preserving the stories of both active and defunct bands, and the role of pan in community life, youth development, and national identity.
