In her message to the nation, President Christine Kangaloo noted that, despite the harsh working and living conditions that the indentured immigrants faced, they built a strong community and cultural traditions that remain a vital part of who we are as a country.
President Kangaloo said that among the lessons learned through the experience are that suffering does not need to become bitterness, that memory can guide rather than divide, and that devotion to one’s heritage can strengthen, not diminish, devotion to one’s country.
