Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath says the Government is preparing to announce major investments in water infrastructure as it seeks to address this country’s ageing pipeline network.
Speaking after the completion of repairs to the Bridal Road water main in Cunupia on Monday evening, he said the project exposed the extent of deteriorating infrastructure across the country and underscored the need for large-scale upgrades.
Minister Padarath confirmed that discussions are already underway ahead of the national budget on replacing ageing mains and pipelines and upgrading critical water infrastructure.
“As I’ve mentioned before, WASA will continue to monitor the developments here as well as other locations. I know today we spoke about what’s happening with respect to Maraval. The CEO has given me the commitment that that too is a project that we are actively looking at. As we go into budget, we will be speaking about major infrastructural development works and the change out of pipelines and mains across the country. Today we had a meeting about that as well as some of the water treatment facilities.”
