With Trinidad and Tobago’s rich history, the names of places, as do the diversity of the people, reflect the input the indigenous peoples and various settlers have had on the twin island nation. The so-called “Avocat Waterfall” is one such place, that has been misnamed for so long, its original name and story have been distorted and fallen out of common knowledge. It is the history of an Irish settlement in Trinidad which can be credited with its proper name, Avoca.
