Seeking Justice For Slavery

The Reconstituted National Committee on Reparations said it is committed to pushing forward justice for crimes committed against those enslaved.

This week is National Reparation Week which focuses on repairing damage caused by 500 years of slavery, colonialism, and the Middle Passage.

Culture and Communications Consultant Attilah Springer suggests that reparations is not just about the past but also the future. It is about dealing with the trauma past crimes have caused and how these have affected today’s historical, spiritual, and cultural norms.

A public lecture will be held on Wednesday afternoon exploring the topic with an eye to restitution for native genocide and enslavement. Ms. Springer said this week, there will be even more events aimed at raising awareness and educating the public with a focus on educating youth about reparations in both Trinidad and Tobago.
