“Dreams can become reality with hard work, discipline, and dedication.” Those were the words echoed by Trinbago Knight Riders captain Nicholas Pooran, who accepted the Chaconia Gold award on behalf of his teammates at Wednesday’s 2025 National Awards Ceremony.
According to Mr. Pooran, news of the award came as a complete surprise to the entire team. He described it as a moment for the history books and one of the most memorable in their lives.
He added that mastering your craft can open doors, even helping to support your family financially, but noted that he has now embraced another role.
“For me now, my role is to, how can I inspire the next generation and motivate them. Personally, I believe that sports teaches you a lot of things. It teaches you discipline. It helps you come out of poverty. We know as young guys the influences we get at a young age. But for me, I just don’t want anyone to give up.”
He also expressed gratitude to everyone for their support and recognition. Mr. Pooran noted that for sportsmen and athletes alike, it is important that their hard work does not go unnoticed. He added that this was the first time they had been invited to a function of this magnitude, and it was humbling.
“Sports could be really stressful at times, and getting this award, a lot of our guys is really special, and again, because we know for a fact how difficult it is and how much we have to sacrifice as well. So, getting this medal here shows that the government really appreciates what we do.”
