T&T Eyes Expanded Trade Relations With Canada

The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce will be organising a trade mission to Canada later this year.

This was revealed by High Commissioner for Canada to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Michael Callan, during the 4th Annual Canada-Caribbean Institute Research Symposium on Wednesday evening.

He noted that Canada and the Caribbean are not merely friendly nations but long-entwined economic partners, whose trade relationship pre-dates independence on both sides.

But the High Commissioner warned that shifting geopolitical tides require the Caribbean to broaden its economic options and secure new footholds in global markets.

“In September this year, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce is organising a trade mission to Canada. For those who are familiar with Prime Minister Carney’s speech at Davos, you might be familiar with his reference to variable geometry. And to me, it’s in that spirit that it seems like an opportune moment to rally interested partners and build this trade delegation into a wider Caribbean-Canada trade mission. It would be the first of its kind and would draw more engagement than any single nation visit on its own.”
