T&TEC Restores Electricity Within Two Hours After Vandalism

In two separate incidents this week, T&TEC’s Emergency Crews responded quickly to restore electricity to customers after outages triggered by vandalism.

On Monday, intentional damage to a high-voltage cable at the Harmony Hall 66kV Substation in San Fernando at approximately 9:00 p.m. interrupted supply to customers in Marabella and San Fernando. Due to the quick response of Emergency Crews from the Southern Distribution Area, service was restored in just under two hours, by 10:45 p.m.

Customers in Beetham Gardens and Sea Lots experienced a similar outage on Thursday at 5:06 p.m. after an apparent attempt to steal cable at the Abattoir Substation in Port of Spain. Crews from the Northern Area responded immediately, restoring supply to Sea Lots within one hour, and to Beetham Gardens within two hours.

General Manager Ian Ramrattan strongly condemned the reckless and unlawful actions, stating that they compromise the reliability of the electricity supply and cause significant hardship to customers. “Such acts of vandalism threaten the safety and well-being of communities. We remind the public that tampering with or interacting with T&TEC’s infrastructure can cause physical harm, including electrocution and serious injury. For your safety, please avoid any contact with overhead lines, substations and related equipment.”

T&TEC’s Security Department is working with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to investigate both incidents.
