The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has donated a fully equipped Mobile Health Clinic to the Ministry of Health, strengthening efforts to bring essential healthcare services closer to underserved and hard-to-reach communities across Trinidad and Tobago.
The donation forms part of a partnership involving UNFPA, the Government of Canada (Global Affairs Canada), the Ministry of Health and the Family Planning Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FPATT). The mobile clinic will be operated by FPATT under the oversight of the Ministry of Health to support community-based healthcare and outreach services.
The mobile clinic is designed to improve access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, primary healthcare screening, diagnostic services and emergency care, particularly in communities where geographical barriers may limit access to healthcare facilities.
The fully climate-controlled unit is equipped with two clinical screening and examination spaces, an examination bed, diagnostic kits, medical refrigeration, examination lights and other essential medical equipment. It also includes emergency response equipment such as oxygen, suction equipment, resuscitation bags, a spinal board, stretcher and head immobilizer.
The clinic’s mobility will allow FPATT to take healthcare services directly into communities, supporting early screening, health education and referrals to primary healthcare facilities and the wider public health system where additional care is required.
The importance of the mobile clinic lies in strengthening the organisation’s capacity to expand its outreach and deliver quality healthcare services throughout Trinidad and Tobago. This initiative represents an important step toward achieving equitable access to healthcare and enhancing public health outcomes nationwide.
The initiative also builds on FPATT’s longstanding work in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights in Trinidad and Tobago through collaboration with national, regional and international partners. The mobile clinic will therefore complement existing primary healthcare services and support a more people-centred approach to healthcare delivery.
