The University of the West Indies is mourning the passing of Emeritus Professor John Agard, who died on June 19 at the age of 71.
A release from the St. Augustine Campus described Professor Agard as a leading figure in environmental and climate change science whose contributions extended far beyond academia.
Campus Principal Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine praised his commitment to research, mentorship, and public service.
Professor Agard played a key role in shaping environmental policy in Trinidad and Tobago, helping to advance legislation on environmental protection and the designation of protected areas.
Internationally, he contributed to major climate and sustainable development assessments, including reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.
The University has extended condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and former students.
