Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training Professor Prakash Persad says the UWI Penal-Debe Campus is moving closer to full operation, with the Government continuing to advance rehabilitation works.
Speaking during the Standing Finance Committee on Tuesday evening, he said the campus is a key part of the Government’s efforts to expand access to higher education and skills training in South Trinidad.
The Minister said work is actively progressing to bring the campus into operation.
“Work towards the opening of the UWI Penal-Debe campus is well underway. Not only in the physical infrastructure that has been rehabilitated, but also the educational infrastructure so that students will access a variety of academic programmes of national relevance, spanning pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate studies. And therefore, when the campus opens, it will be a full opening, not a so-called practical one. Finally, there will be another high-quality tertiary level institution in South Trinidad to put an end to geographic discrimination.”
