A 22-year-old British national was intercepted by Customs and Excise officers while attempting to smuggle marijuana, estimated to be worth more than $5 million, into Trinidad and Tobago through Piarco International Airport.
According to reports, during routine passenger clearance operations, Customs officers at the airport referred the British national for further examination of their luggage.
During the examination, officers discovered a quantity of plant-like material concealed within the passenger’s baggage.
Field-testing confirmed the substance to be marijuana, with an estimated street value of $5,996,295.80.
The matter is being pursued under the Customs Act, Chapter 78:01, and charges are expected to follow in relation to the importation of prohibited goods.
