Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday presented the crown to the winner of the inaugural Miss Afro T&T 2026 Pageant, praising all contestants for their talent, confidence and cultural awareness.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar applauded the contestants in the competition on their cultural presentations.
“I was sitting next to Dr. Dowlath and, of course, he is rooting for one of these ladies because she’s from his constituency. And we were sitting there and we were both, as educators, so impressed with the theme that each of your spoke on with your, I am not going to do the cultural, I stumble a little bit here, with the cultural parts that you could remember, but you were so good in your speaking and in the themes that you expressed so give all these women a round of applause.”
The Prime Minister noted that several of the young women spoke about remembering.
“The best that we can do to honour our ancestors who came out of Africa is to remember. To remember what they gave us, to remember what they left with us. And many of you who spoke tonight told us whether it is in culture, whether it is in rhythm, whether it is in dance, whether it is in just joy of living let us give praise and thanks, I say, put your hands for all our ancestors who brought us to this great land.”
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar noted that differences of opinions in society should not prevent us from working together for the country.
“And sometimes, you know, we may have differences of opinion, sometimes we may say things that some are not happy with but at the end of the let us remember that we are Trinbagonians and remember together we aspire, to achieve. So congratulations to all these beautiful young women. Thank you, they have made us all proud.”
Under the theme of the inaugural Miss Afro T&T 2026 was ‘Threads of Africa, Fabric of a Nation’, 14 young women, representing different African nations, gave their all at the inaugural Miss Afro T&T Pageant, hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Community Development at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts in San Fernando.
