Empowering Teen Mothers

Pregnancy during adolescence has far-reaching negative consequences on the educational and employment trajectories of teen mothers.

To empower these young mothers to thrive and break intergenerational cycles of poverty, the Division of Wellness and Social Protection designed the Programme for Adolescent Mothers in 2003.

Social Worker, Erla Bacchus-Charles, said more on the programme’s mission and vision. Further, the programme employs a holistic range of educational, developmental and skills training. But while the programme has seen many success stories and a reduction in the number of mothers below the age of 13, Ms. Bacchus-Charles believes early conversation is the best prevention measure.
