Health Minister: Government Will Only Purchase WHO-Approved Anti-Viral Drugs

Government is adamant that it will not purchase any anti-viral drug to treat COVID-19 unless it is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The statement came from Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh following a question from the Opposition during the Standing Finance Committee in the Parliament this morning.

A CNN report stated that pharmaceutical company, Merck, is seeking US FDA Emergency Use Authorization for its experimental antiviral COVID-19 treatment known as Molnupiravir.

Mr. Deyalsingh dismissed any suggestion for Government to purchase the drug even before it is approved.

According to CNN, if EUA is granted, the drug made by Merck would be the first oral antiviral treatment to fight COVID-19.
