I Love Tobago – Children’s Book Highlights Wonders Of Buccoo Reef

It is no secret that Tobago is home to natural wonders that attract visitors from across the globe. In this week’s I Love Tobago segment, one author is using storytelling to introduce children to the island’s natural treasures while inspiring a deeper appreciation of the environment.

Author and self-published Leeanna Alexander said after moving to Tobago at the age of seven, she quickly fell in love with the island’s natural beauty.

Mrs. Alexander then embarked on a mission to create storybooks. A Trip to the Buccoo Reef is the first in a series of children’s books under the theme, “Tobago Treasure Trips.” The inspiration for the book’s design came from her experiences as both a mother and teacher.

The non-fiction publication aims to educate children about one of Tobago’s most treasured ecosystems.

Though it may appear to be a simple undertaking, Mrs. Alexander admitted it took 11 years to complete the publication. Illustrators Gery-Anne La Rose and Marsha Gomes-Mckie joined her in conducting extensive research and site visits to ensure the images accurately reflected the environment. She added that with support from Mary Coffey, she was able to secure a design that highlighted the vibrancy of Buccoo Reef.

Mrs. Alexander hopes that after reading the book, children will become environmental stewards.

A Trip to the Buccoo Reef is available at Mrs. Alexander’s school, Mighty Minds Inclusive Learning Centre in Signal Hill, Tobago. She also hopes her books will help young readers develop a stronger sense of Tobago identity.

And as Tobago recently celebrated 250 years since the Main Ridge Forest Reserve was declared legally protected, it is fitting that Mrs. Alexander’s next book is titled — A Trip to the Rain Forest.
