Landmark MOU Between UWI & MSDFS To Strengthen Research Ethics And Policy Impact

The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus and the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding for advancements in research ethics.

According to Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, Lenor Baptiste-Simmons, the Government has long recognised the vital role of research in shaping public policy, particularly in the social sector, prompting the reconstitution and renewal of the Inter-Ministerial Research Council (IMRC).

“In March 2022, Cabinet approved the reconstitution of the IMRC, setting the foundation for the continued coordination of our National Social Research Agenda. This renewal is a testament to the Government’s commitment to enhancing the quality and impact of research.”

PS Baptiste-Simmons explained that the IMRC engaged The UWI in order to establish a robust Research Ethics Committee.

She said this partnership has the potential to not only elevate the standards of social research in Trinidad and Tobago, but also TO contribute to the development of policies and interventions rooted in evidence, informed by ethical considerations, and focussed on improving the lives of citizens.

“As researchers, you are not only tasked with producing knowledge, but also with upholding the dignity, rights, and welfare of the individuals and communities involved in your studies. It is essential that we ensure that our research does not cause harm, but rather contributes positively to societal well-being.”

Director, School for Graduate Studies & Research and Chair, Campus Committee for Graduate Studies & Research, Professor Duraisamy Saravanakumar, said although this partnership focusses on enhancing social and economic development research, there is great potential for further collaboration, suggesting key areas like climate change, trade, and community research.

“This clearly says that there is a lot more to collaborate with the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, beyond partnership or partnering with the support or technical support to establish the Research Ethics Committee for the social-related or social-sector-related research.”

Additionally, this partnership will also focus on training and public education and professional development programmes that will ensure researchers in the social sector are adhering to ethical principles in their research.
