Ministry Of Sport And Youth Affairs Hails Inspiring Close To Special Olympics Trinidad And Tobago National Games

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs has extended congratulations to Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago (SOTT) on the successful conclusion of its National Games, which wrapped up on Saturday at the International School of Port of Spain. The Games brought together athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families from across the country in a celebration of courage, determination, and inclusion.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Ms. Penelope Bradshaw-Niles, attended the closing ceremony on behalf of the Honourable Phillip Watts, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, and delivered remarks. In her address, Ms. Bradshaw-Niles commended the athletes for their performances and their example to the nation.

“Over the past weeks, we have witnessed far more than competition; we have experienced the true meaning of courage, determination, and the unbreakable human spirit, Ms. Bradshaw-Niles said. Our athletes have shown that sport is not only about medals, but about perseverance, discipline, and the courage to rise above challenges, and in doing so they have inspired Trinidad and Tobago.”

Permanent Secretary also recognised the vital role of coaches, families, and volunteers in supporting the athletes.

“You are the foundation upon which these athletes stand. Your patience, encouragement, and belief in their potential continue to shape lives and build confidence far beyond the field of play, she added.”

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Phillip Watts, conveyed his congratulations and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago and inclusive sport nationwide.

“The Special Olympics movement reminds us that inclusion is not a choice, it is a responsibility, Minister Watts stated. As a Ministry, we remain committed to strengthening programmes, expanding access, and ensuring that every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate, to excel, and to shine through sport.”

The Minister further underscored the need for collaboration across the public sector and civil society to advance equity in sport.

“Building a truly inclusive sporting landscape requires partnership across Government, with organisations like Special Olympics TT, and with our communities. Together, we can remove barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create safe, accessible spaces where all our athletes feel valued and supported,” he said.

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs thanked Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago, its leadership and technical teams, sponsors, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful staging of the National Games. The Ministry also pledged its continued collaboration with SOTT in advancing opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities through sport.

“Today we close the National Games, but we continue the journey toward a more inclusive, compassionate, and united Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Bradshaw-Niles said. May the spirit of these Games continue to inspire us all.”
