OWTU Calls For Compensation For Family Of Worker Killed In Rig Collapse

President of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU), Ancel Roget, is calling for compensation for the family of Pete Phillip, the worker who lost his life when a Well Services rig partially collapsed in December.

It has been more than forty days since Well Services Company Limited’s Rig 110 partially collapsed off the South West coast of Trinidad.

OWTU President Ancel Roget said his union is conducting its own investigation into the incident.

“We call for proper, proper, and adequate, and immediate compensation to the family of the deceased worker. We call for that. We demand that. They deserve that. You can’t bring back the worker.”

The younger brother of the worker who died in the incident, Elvis Phillip, said he is not satisfied that enough is being done to retrieve his brother’s remains.

“It hurts my heart to know my brother lost his life minding he family, sitting down on a job site, going to work, and minding he family. Every day I have to deal with not seeing my brother again, never. The day before the incident, the morning I spoke to my brother.”

On Monday, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Stuart Young spoke with the media about the ongoing investigation. He stated, “As we know, with that unfortunate incident, that is being driven by Well Services and Heritage, and what we’ve done is they’ve brought in international firms. Unfortunately, Mr. Phillip’s body has not as yet been located but when you look at the, what has become of the rig, and in particular where they believe it is, it is going to be an operation to try and find it. I cannot provide any further details.”

Minister Young said the Ministry continues to lend support to the investigating agencies. He acknowledged that all parties involved, especially Mr. Phillip’s family, want closure.
