PM Young Denounces UNC’s Economic Plan, Defends Government Achievements

Prime Minister Stuart Young SC has urged members of the public to be wary of disinformation campaigns by political opponents.

Speaking at a public meeting at the Harris Promenade in San Fernando on Wednesday evening, he said there have been attempts to mislead and fool the population with lies.

The Prime Minister highlighted the remarks by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as indicated in the UNC’s National Economic Transformation Master Plan 2020-2025, saying it will have a significantly devastating effect on our economy and the cost of living.

“If the UNC gets into power on April 28th, 2025, no matter what they say, they are going to devalue our dollars 15 to one, 15 to one.”

He also gave the example of the Government’s restructuring of Petrotrin. Instead of noting its transformation into Heritage Petroleum, it has been said that Petrotrin was simply shut down.

“Today, I could report to you that Heritage is earning billions of dollars in revenue, no loss. It has earned billions of dollars in revenue and hundreds of millions in profit, billions paid in royalty to make sure our children can go to school, to make sure the hospital lights – look behind you – the hospital lights are on and they have nurses and doctors there.”

Prime Minister Young also praised the Government for ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago stayed out of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) while giving his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the TT dollar.

“They increased expenditure by 21 to 22 billion dollars a year. That is irresponsible, but PNM came in, we came in in difficult times in 2015. We had to cut what we could cut. We had to reduce where we could reduce, but we made sure people still had jobs.”

The Prime Minister also pointed to the fact that the PNM has all 41 of its candidates ahead of Nomination Day on April 4th, while the same cannot be said for the Opposition.
