An increase in pedestrian deaths has prompted the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to urge pedestrians and drivers to take greater care and be alert on the nation’s roads.
According to the Traffic & Highway Patrol Branch Roadway Surveillance Unit (RSU), over the last six weeks, ten pedestrian deaths have occurred, accounting for 59% of this year’s road traffic deaths.
Road Traffic Safety Coordinator, Sergeant Brent Batson, said what was most concerning was that 50% of these deaths involving pedestrians occurred along main roads.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, David Powder, expressed disappointment with the figures saying his officers have been enforcing road traffic laws consistently in efforts to help keep the roadways safe.
The road death count so far for the year is 17 compared to 18 for the same period last year.
