West Indies Women Beaten By England

The West Indies women have suffered their first defeat at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England. The Caribbean ladies went under to hosts England by 38 runs at Lord’s in a clash of the unbeatens.

The 22nd match of the ICC Women’s World Cup was one of the most highly anticipated contests in the group stage. The clash between the West Indies and hosts England were the battle of the unbeatens with 3 wins out of three for each, with a chance to enter the semifinal stage. This Group 2 contest was the only fixture on the day and the first at Lord’s, the venue for the Final.

The West indies women won the toss and sent England in to bat and dismissed two for the top three batters for 38. But opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge proved the difference with a top score of 65 which included 8 fours in her knock.

She was eventually run out but not before she shared in a couple of partnerships with Alice Capsey and then Heather Knight.

England Women managed to get a wholesome 186 for 7 in their 20 overs, another big score for them. Ashmini Munisar took two wickets with her off-break but gave up 42 runs.

The West Indies women in response got 21 runs on the board before things started going south.
The reliable skipper Hayley Matthews was controversially dismissed for 14 then Deandra Dottin for 19 with 46 runs on the board.

The Windies were not able to put together sustainable partnerships until Jahzara Claxton, dropped twice, teamed up with Chinelle Henry who drove the score from 69 for 4 to 132 for 5 when Claxton departed for 21. Henry, an unlikely bet, provided a last gasp hope with an unbeaten 51 but her team could only muster 148 for 5 at the end of twenty overs, handing England a 38-run win and a place in the semi-final. The West Indies women face Ireland women on Saturday.
