I Love Tobago – 250 Years Of Main Ridge Forest Reserve Protection

Two hundred and fifty years ago, Tobago led the way in developing environmental policy. British parliamentarians debated and passed an ordinance that, to this day, ensures the legal protection of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve.

In this I Love Tobago segment, Caricia Douglas delves into the significance of this groundbreaking legal decision and explore the island’s grand plans to celebrate this historic milestone.

We spoke with Secretary of the Environment, Climate Resilience and Energy, Darren Henry, at his office, where he took us down memory lane to the genesis of this momentous occasion.

In 1776, the ordinance was passed, paving the way for strict measures to preserve this natural treasure. Now leading environmental policy efforts in Tobago, Secretary Henry noted that the movement undertaken 250 years ago demonstrated true commitment and foresight.

This historic action deserves recognition according to Mr. Henry, who emphasized that protecting the Main Ridge Forest Reserve remains critical to sustaining life in Tobago.

Amid ongoing efforts to preserve the rainforest, climate change continues to pose a serious threat. However, Mr. Henry also lamented the impact of harmful human activities.

As part of efforts to engage and include the public while honouring this milestone, four days of activities have been planned. With final preparations underway, we joined Chairman of the Main Ridge 250 Committee, Bheemal Ramlogan, who shared insight into the upcoming celebrations. Activities begin on Monday, April 27, with an official launch.

While many were not present in 1776 to witness debates among British parliamentarians, the committee is ensuring the public gets a glimpse of that historic moment. On Tuesday, students from secondary schools across the island will bring it to life.

Promoting an “all hands on deck” approach, Tobago House of Assembly officials will also participate in activities within the forest.

And on April 30th, marking 250 years since the ordinance was passed, a moment of reflection will be observed with a unique ceremonial element.

The commemorative week will conclude with a gala ceremony, where twenty-five Tobagonians who played key roles in preserving the Main Ridge Forest Reserve will be honoured.

Stakeholders and officials emphasized that appreciation for Tobago’s rainforest should extend beyond this celebration. Mr. Ramlogan stressed the importance of using the events to educate not only Tobagonians but the world. Hence, he expressed gratitude for collaboration with state owned media company Trinidad and Tobago Television Limited.
