Maloney Community Holds Peace Walk In Memory Of Zwade Alleyne

A year after the tragic killing of young footballer Zwade Alleyne, residents of Maloney took to the streets in a peace walk aimed at promoting unity, youth development and a stand against crime and violence.

Faith Cheruiyot reports

The peace walk through Maloney was held not only to remember the late footballer Zwade Alleyne, who was shot and killed last year while outside his apartment building, but also to send a strong message against crime and violence while promoting unity and youth development within the community.

Captain of the Under-20 team, Quamy Waithe, said there is far more to Maloney than the negative headlines often associated with the area.

Head Coach of Maloney Real Footballers, Keron Bethelmy, said while the club has made progress over the last three years, greater support from the corporate sector and government could help expand its impact on young people.

Mr Bethelmy added that following Alleyne’s death, coaches from across the country have been encouraging youth groups and sporting organisations to work together in the fight against crime and violence.

His hope and the goal of the group is that the peace walk continues to inspire change and remind young people that there are positive paths available within their communities.
