The Veronica Roach Legacy Project is empowering residents of La Canoa through free community initiatives, fundraisers and providing opportunities for local vendors.
The Veronica Roach Legacy Project La Canoa Improvement Centre recently hosted its fundraising concert, Sounds of Freedom.
Director of Communications and Marketing, Dr. Sherrisse Navaro, explained that through initiatives like these, the foundation, which began in 2022, raises funds to assist the community.
“It was begun by my mom and her siblings as a way to honour the work that was done by my grandmother, Veronica Roach, in the area, and to continue her legacy. So here at the centre we are very much for La Canoe people, and we offer a lot of free activities, and events for people of the area, from free medical clinics to free giveaways once a month, to events for seniors, we do movie dates for seniors and the list goes on and on.”
Once a month, it also transforms into a venue for vendors in the area to sell their wares.
“Our monthly marketplace event it’s called the marketplace, and it works as a fundraiser for the centre as well as a space for people of La Canoe to come and sell and create multiple sources of income for themselves, so La Canoe vendors get free spaces, to come and sell their goods or whatever they like to do.”
As the Veronica Roach Legacy Project La Canoa Improvement Centre continues to assist members of the community, members of the public are encouraged to donate items, services or lend their time, as all proceeds go towards empowering the community.
